Shoulder Pain

Rotator cuff strain and joint irritation from impact and steering wheel bracing.

What is shoulder pain?

Shoulder injuries are extremely common after motor vehicle accidents, especially in drivers who brace against the steering wheel at the moment of impact.

The shoulder is a shallow ball-and-socket joint stabilized almost entirely by the rotator cuff, four small muscles that are easily strained by sudden loading.

Seatbelt forces, airbag deployment, and the natural reflex to brace can all create rotator cuff strain, shoulder impingement, and AC joint irritation that linger for months without care.

Common symptoms

  • Pain reaching overhead or behind your back
  • Aching at night, especially when lying on the shoulder
  • Weakness when lifting or carrying
  • Clicking, popping, or catching with movement
  • Pain on the top of the shoulder near the collarbone
  • Limited range of motion getting dressed
  • Pain that radiates down the arm

How we treat it

We assess the shoulder, neck, and upper back together because shoulder pain after an accident is rarely an isolated joint problem.

Joint mobilization restores the proper glide of the shoulder and shoulder blade, while soft-tissue therapy releases the rotator cuff and surrounding muscles.

Progressive rehabilitation rebuilds rotator cuff strength and scapular control with carefully sequenced exercises you can continue at home.

Most patients see meaningful improvement in pain and range of motion within the first few weeks of consistent care.

When to seek care

Shoulder injuries that are not treated early often develop into adhesive capsulitis or chronic impingement, both of which take far longer to resolve than the original injury.

Remember that pain from an auto accident is often delayed by 24 to 72 hours. Adrenaline can mask the injury at the scene, so even mild symptoms after a collision are worth a same-day evaluation.
